Celebrating Our Own Veterans Today

November 11, 2020 //  by Harmony Coburn

There has been a lot of (greatly appreciated) news about healthcare workers being heroes. But the men and women who have served, many of whom make their home with us, are the people we celebrate today. Thank you to all Veterans on this special day.

Our Veterans were reminded just how special they are and that they are OUR HEROES!  Our Veterans received a special gift  and plaque and enjoyed Casey’s pizza for lunch along with their choice of Root Beer, Pepsi or Coke!  In the afternoon Veterans enjoyed some red, white and blue ice cream and a game of BINGO!

Our activity team plans activities each month that will meet the objectives of maintaining social distancing and strict infection control practices while ensuring that each resident has the kind of love and support that makes Pleasant Meadows a home, not just a care facility.

Happy Global Handwashing Day 2020!

October 15, 2020 //  by Harmony Coburn

2020 brings highlights the importance of hand hygiene more than any of the previous years since Global Handwashing Day was initiated by the Global Handwashing Partnership (GHP) in August 2008 at the annual World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden. You can learn more about the history of this annual event here.

Handwashing with soap and water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stop the spread of germs and to protect the lives of your loved ones.

Guide of how to wash hands correctly

This is necessary for everyone at work and at home, here and everywhere. No matter which department you are in – Handwashing is everybody’s business.

“Handwashing is also key in the fight against COVID-19. Handwashing with soap destroys the outer membrane of the virus and thereby inactivates it. One study found that regular handwashing with soap can reduce the likelihood of COVID-19 infection by 36%.”

Resident Spotlight: John “Jack” Wilkinson

October 7, 2020 //  by Harmony Coburn

Jack was born in Danville, IL to John and Louise Wilkinson. His father was an accountant and his mother was a homemaker. Jack had one brother William and one sister Susann.

Growing up in Danville he attended Edison school and graduated from Danville High School. He attended some college but decided that was just not for him.

Jack is a proud veteran of the United States Army.

Jack worked for many years at the Danville Commercial Newspaper where he was in the Advertising Department. He sold advertising space to businesses in the community as well as set up the printing press with the finished advertising campaign.

He never married but stayed very busy meeting people by fishing, Revolutionary War reenactments, the Red Mask theater and various singing groups. Jack volunteered at the Red Cross, United Way and the Boy Scouts. He was also an active member at the First Presbyterian Church in Danville and enjoyed visiting antique shops in his spare time.

Jack is an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and watches the games when he gets the chance. As an avid reader, he enjoys auto biographies of Presidents and political figures.

Jack resides with us at Pleasant Meadows and his hobbies now include drinking coffee (his favorite), listening to his favorite artists such as Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, watching politics and the news on tv, reading the Danville Commercial News, going outside and  live musical entertainment.
